Our Story

From a humble Sunday dinner on a Savannah porch to a celebration spanning four generations and four states.

Where It All Began

A Sunday Dinner That Changed Everything

In the summer of 1973, Mae Johnson — known to all as "Mama Mae" — decided her growing family needed a reason to come together. She dusted off her grandmother's cast-iron skillet, cooked enough food for an army, and told her four children: "Bring everybody."

That first gathering on the front porch of the Johnson homestead at 412 Habersham Street was simple — fried chicken, collard greens, sweet tea, and stories that lasted until the fireflies came out.

Robert Johnson Sr. would later say: "Mae didn't just cook dinner that day. She cooked up a tradition."

"

Family isn't just about who you're born to. It's about who you show up for.

— Mae Johnson, 2015

Traditions

The Recipes That Bind Us

Every Johnson reunion starts in the kitchen. Mama Mae's handwritten recipe book — a tattered composition notebook with grease-stained pages — has been passed down and photocopied so many times that every branch of the family has their own copy.

Her buttermilk cornbread, slow-cooked collard greens, and legendary peach cobbler remain the centerpiece of every reunion meal.

The younger generation has added their twist — Cousin Marcus's smoked brisket and Niece Aaliyah's vegan mac and cheese are now reunion staples too.

Faith & Family

Our foundation is built on unwavering faith and the bonds of family that transcend distance and time.

Education & Growth

The Johnsons have produced teachers, doctors, engineers, and artists — rooted in Mae's belief that knowledge is freedom.
